Do you know what Lupus is? Light up the Darkness…

“Do you know what Lupus is?””“Light up the Darkness…”Lupus can be Mild, Lupus can be disabling, and Lupus can be Fatal.SLE-Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: hard to say – harder to live with. What is Lupus? So few have heard of it, yet worldwide it’s seen as more common than Leukemia, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy. Some 50,000 people are believed to suffer with the disease just in the UK of whom 90% are female. Men and young children can also be affected by Lupus. It is estimated that 1 in 750 women in Europe suffer with the condition; however Lupus is more prevalent in other races. The incidence in white women is 1 in 1000 compared with that of 1 in 250 in black women and even higher in Asian populations.Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) causes the body’s immune system to go into overdrive and start to attack itself. The Symptoms are many and varied, and the illness often seems to mimic other diseases. This gives rise to difficulty in diagnosis and the condition can be overlooked, sometimes for years unless your GP or consultant is alert to the possibility of Lupus. Achieving an earlier diagnosis of Lupus allows a better opportunity for control of the disease.LUPUS IS NEITHER INFECTIOUS NOR CONTAGIOUS, but it can be triggered:• At puberty• After childbirth• Through sunlight• After prolonged courses of medication• During menopause• After a viral infection• As a result of traumaThe symptoms may include• Extreme fatigue• Eye problems• Mouth ulcers• Miscarriage• Possible involvement of the kidneys, heart, lungs and brain.• Joint / muscle pain• Depression• Facial or other rashes• AnemiaThere is no definitive cure for Lupus so far. People diagnosed with Lupus remain under medical care with continuing medication. Many symptoms have less impact as a result, but side effects can often occur. Lupus can adversely influence the lives of patients, their families, colleagues and friends.Diagnosis and Treatment of LupusDue to the various and often unspecified symptoms, it may take time to attain a definite diagnosis. The diagnosis can be confirmed by careful clinical investigation and by blood tests (eg. Anti-nuclear anti bodies). The prognosis for Lupus patients has changed dramatically during the past few decades and it can often be treated effectively. The Type and dosage of the medication depends upon the disease activity and organ involvement. Some patients with mild disease or those in remission may not even require any therapy. Recent revelations that Lady Gaga may have been diagnosed with a form of Lupus may also begin to educate people about this complicated diseaseOn July 10th, the Lupus Support Group will get together at 2pm to discuss and support one another at the Al Biraa Arthritis & Bone Centre, the brand new facility in Dubai dedicated to raising awareness of arthritis, under the patronage of the Emirates Arthritis Foundation. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Lupus or if you would simply like to attend this event in order to gain more information and knowledge about this disease, please contact us immediately.
Big success for Patient Pamper Day on 26th June at The Shelter

Emirates Arthritis Foundation Big success for Patient Pamper Day on 26thJune at The Shelter FOR IMMIDATE RELEASE The Emirates Arthritis Foundation and The Shelter teamed up to create a Patient Pamper day on Saturday, 26th of June for patients of the EAF. Over 50 patients attended the event in order to pamper themselves for a few hours. These mini events are crucial for Emirates Arthritis patients in order for them to integrate with one another and raise awareness in our community. The Al Biraa Arthritis & Bone Centre is the first arthritis clinic in the region to specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of joint diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, and lupus); bone diseases (osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency); and muscle diseases (fibromyalgia and repetitive stress syndrome). Along with their expert advice, The Pamper afternoon included Skin Consultations from Kaya Skin Clinic, Polish Changes from Nbar, Demonstrations from Hayley Cutler-Yoga Instructor, A Biotheripist, massages from Natural Healing Wellness Spa and some yummy pineapple cupcakes complements of Sweet Stuff. There was also a "chill out zone" for the kids where they watched dvd’s and entertained themselves. “Arthritis is a chronic condition and one we have to deal with on a daily basis. The Patient Pamper day was a great way to forget about the pain for a few hours and feel good about ourselves,” said Katrina Thornly, Patient Support Director of the Emirates Arthritis Foundation, “and it would not have been possible without the generous time and efforts of all our sponsors that attended and the hospitality provided by The Shelter. It is comforting to see the compassion in people and we hope to make this a regular event”. EAF is a non-profit organisation that contributes to the welfare of the entire region by providing an extensive range of events and programs to support arthritis patients. In addition, their regional outreach initiatives comprise of a variety of recreational programmes, drawing upon support from the healthcare community. Their code of ethics at the Emirates Arthritis Foundation is based upon promoting ideals of corporate fairness, transparency and accountability, in order to remain a trusted community body and further the knowledge and treatment of arthritis. * ARTHRITIS: The word means inflammation of the joints, but it is used as a general term which acknowledges that something is wrong with the body’s musculoskeletal system. Diagnosis of the exact disease among the over 200 or so different types of arthritis is often difficult and may take some time. * Arthritis affects children as well as adults. Around 12,000 children have arthritis; 27,000 under 25. * 1 in 5 people worldwide suffer from Arthritis and the average age is 43 * 60% of suffers in the UAE are Arab local. This disease is very understated in the UAE due to lack of education on the subject. For more information on the event as well as The Emirates Arthritis Foundation and the wonderful work and awareness they are spreading in the community, please contact: Suzanne SheerinAccount ManagerCS-PR Group+971508704741

Efforts Increase to Fight the Region’s ‘Silent Disease’

Achieving an earlier diagnosis of Lupus allows a better opportunity for control of the disease.LUPUS IS NEITHER INFECTIOUS NOR CONTAGIOUS, but it can be triggered:· At puberty· After childbirth· Through sunlight· After prolonged courses of medication· During menopause· After a viral infection· As a result of traumaThe symptoms may include· Extreme fatigue· Eye problems· Mouth ulcers· Miscarriage· Possible involvement of the kidneys, heart, lungs and brain.· Joint / muscle pain· Depression· Facial or other rashes· AnemiaThere is no definitive cure for Lupus so far. All enquiries will be handled under the strictest of confidentiality.“Light up the darkness...”Suzanne SheerinAccount ManagerCS-PR Group+971508704741

Women’s World Live is being held at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre 7-10 April 2010.‘The UAE is currently experiencing a crisis whereby 20% of women are affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis yet patients are typically experiencing a year’s delay in diagnosis and a further nine months before starting treatment.
